Land Salmon
Grass finished lamb has been dubbed land salmon because like the famous fatty fish, it has close to the perfect 1:1 ration of Omega 6: Omega 3 fatty acids.
That’s important: Omega 3 metabolites are critical for resolving inflammation, and chronic inflammation and high Omega 6: Omega 3 ratio is associated with depression, ADHD, cancer, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and beyond.
That funny name, Land Salmon? It puts a Saskatchwan shaped smile on my face. Rotated 90 degrees… if you will.
I relish the fact that we have a local, Saskatchewan grown product that is high in important Omega 3 fats, and balanced in terms of ratio to Omega 6 fatty acids.
I have been using grass finished lamb in my cooking seasonally for about 13 years. Years ago, our neighbor near Lashburn, Saskatchewan, was raising lamb and we purchased halves from her in the fall. Our preference was (and is!) hogget - lamb over 11 months of age and younger than 24 months of age. The meat was mild and tender, and importantly, without the nuanced flavour that often turns people off of lamb. We had lamb in high end restaurants, but it never compared to the lamb we purchased from our friend, finished on grass, and prepared with simple recipes at home.
Fast forward and we are now marketing our own grass finished lamb. We are now completely sold out of our forage finished lamb this season. Thank you to all of our buyers who feel the pleasure in purchasing high quality local products for themselves and their families, just as we do.
Though we are out of forage finished lamb, we are fully stocked on other local Saskatchewan lamb. It is not forage finished, but it is a crowd pleaser, and available for ordering any time while supplies last. We suggest ordering your Easter lamb soon.
Were you wanting to purchase grass or forage finished lamb and missed out on the opportunity? May we suggest signing up for our email list? We will email you when our seasonally available products are ready.
It’s your best bet for making sure your order is in place for next season’s grass finished lamb. You can expect to hear from us in Fall, 2023, when Hogget is ready, and periodically before that with helpful, simple recipes and articles about healthy aging and meal planning.
